Like any certifiable Breyer history nerd, I am always on the look-out for interesting oddities---the weirder, the better. Earlier this year, while cruising eBay, I spotted a nice old Black Beauty Western Horse with an original mailer box. I was curious to see if the box really did go with the horse, so I clicked on the auction and scrolled down to see all of the pictures. I noted with interest that the number on the box did not correspond to a Breyer catalog number but rather it was a special run number from one of the holiday mail order catalogs like Sears. I quickly started looking through my reference photos of catalog pages, hoping I could figure out just what this box was and which model it went with. I was very pleasantly surprised to realize it was the 1960 "Candy-Packin' Black Beauty" special run Western Horse from Montgomery Wards!

| The ad really did go to print with the top of the Western Horse's head off the page. Doh! |
These special runs were of course Christmas items, but Halloween is the real candy season, so I think it's fitting to share this today. (Besides, my local Walgreens already had Christmas stuff invading the Halloween aisle earlier this week, and by tomorrow, the full-on Christmas advertising blitz season will be upon us officially. Thanksgiving who?)
The candy from this set was of course long since gone in the 65+ years since it was originally sold, but the horse and box are original, and it was easy to find hard candy that matched the original.
There are several more candy Breyer special runs from Sears and Montgomery Wards, but I'll cover those in a subsequent post. I hope you all have a Happy Halloween! Thanks as always for reading!

[it should be possible to delete a comment] I've read about candy models but this is my first real look at an original. I have to hand it to you for figuring out exactly which candy went with them!
